Can you remember roughly what the inport duty was? I know the kit from UK suppliers is over ?300 where they only want $400 plus $40 postage., so for $440 or about ?220 I can have it shipped over but worrie about the import duty. Looking at buying the deluxe package myself direct from the USA. Actually purchased it around the time I stopped using the radio! Using an ATAS120 my ?20 dipole blew it out of the water,?250 for the ATAS Pheew,I guess there is always Ebay!!!!!! Ps,it only took about an hour to make it at a cost of ?10 for the two whips.įair enough the conduit was"free" yet a guess at about a fiver anyone could get it.20mm white plastic(heavy gauge) times 1 length,4 couplers,1 tee box and two stuffing glands to support the whips at the end of the conduit,One roll of bell wire at a cost of about a fiver aswel and up and running on 20m for ?20.Cool. Thanks to Bud for the design and all on the forum for there thoughts and help. I'm going to improve the build of the aerial which is'nt to bad at the moment and tweak about a bit to try and improve it but all in all i thought that it wasn't to bad for a first attempt. My first contact on HF.Thanked the station ,retuned and bang,Porto Portugal,5 and 5. To my utter astonisment a reply from Slovenia came back with a 5 and 9. No joy was to be had so i retuned to a used frequency to a dx station calling cq and put in my call sign. With this done and the 857 accepting the antenna, i proceeded to call DX. I followed the measurements as per the instruction with a couple of alterations, the length of the telescopic aerials was different and i used bell wire the full length of the aerial( except of course the final whip ) also forming the trap from the bell wire so one continues piece of wire was used as my intentions were to DX on the 20m band only for the time being.Īfter strapping it rather loosely to a fence post on the way home from work i "tuned" it in with the 857D SWR meter so as to achieve a low reading on the scale.( about 15mins in total ) I made the pole with several pieces of 20mm conduit( being an electrician this is in abundance ) plastic of course!!! Well i did what i said i was going to do but several hours/days early. It is SOOOO much more quiet than wires - oh and the whole thing imported (de luxe kit) from the states is less than half the UK price.Įham only give it a 4.8/4.9 so admittedly it isn't perfect Of course it can be made for a fraction of the cost, as can any antenna. Oh yes, and once you use it on the bands - remember the tap points on the coils and SWR will be a sweet distant memory - no ATU needed!Īaddrriiaann wrote:looks just like another center fed dipole compromise!ok so theres coils and a balun, and at that price it should be good, ( someone had to cut it to length with a hacksaw)its like most other things you look at chances are that the raw price isnt probably even a tenth of the cost!.oh yeh, and then you put 100watts through it.so it must be a good antenna and value for money!.think about it!īeautiful piece of kit - ok one might not want to pay a few hundred quid for what you say it is, but many have and it is a joy to behold - a fantastically built system oh and of course 100w helps - I believe a couple of s points over 5w - the same antenna works superbly with a battery operated 817 on 2.5 watts (16db or 2-3s points less lol). Check out the link below and read the testimonials and just look at the thing. This is the most intersting antenna I ever saw, and the build quality is awesome. still considerably cheaper than W&S were charging at the time. I imported from the manufacturer direct, and paid import duty etc. The whole kit folds into a tiny package (even easily fits the Micra's boot). basically it is a rotary dipole as mentioned with coils on both legs and various taps on the coil for the different bands. ok everything is 5/9 we know that.Ĭan't wait to try it on the hills on 27mhz - it covers all bands and if you buy the deluxe package, it comes with tripod/stand, extention pole, antenna, plugs, coils, whips etc. Actually purchased it around the time I stopped using the radio!īriefly tried it indoors on 7 & 40m with 5/9+ reports into Italy & Russia etc. I purchased one of these bad boys a few years ago having read fantastic reports.
